Monty the giant schnauzer wins Best in Show

A giant schnauzer named Monty proudly took the title of Best in Show at the esteemed Westminster Kennel Club dog show on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in canine competitions across the United States. After impressively reaching the finals for three consecutive years, Monty triumphed over more than 2,500 competing dogs, becoming the first giant schnauzer to clinch this prestigious award. "The puppy did the damn thing," exclaimed Monty’s owner, Katie Bernardin, during the event held at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City.

This year marks the 149th anniversary of the Westminster Kennel Club show— the oldest dog club in the U.S. and the second-longest sporting event in the country, second only to the Kentucky Derby. Each year, over 200 breeds compete, and the winners from various groups move on to vie for the ultimate prize. Last year, Monty made waves winning the Working Group category for two years but finally secured the overall title this time around, giving the Working Group its first Best in Show award since 2004.

Judge Paula Nykiel, a renowned breeder and handler, selected Monty for the Best in Show title, noting the dog's exceptional performance in the preliminary events throughout the three-day competition. Judges assess each contestant on adherence to breed standards and a thorough examination of their physique. Monty outshone notable contenders, including Bourbon, a nine-year-old whippet who made a comeback to secure the Reserve Best title for the third time. Other finalists included Comet the shih tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd, and Neal the bichon frise. The event promises excitement for next year’s competitors, especially with a female miniature poodle taking home Best in Show 2024.

Scrim the runaway dog captured – again – after latest escape in New Orleans

Scrim the runaway dog captured – again – after latest escape in New Orleans

Meet Scrim, a wiry terrier who has truly earned his title as New Orleans's most notorious escape artist. After a lengthy nine-month period filled with daring adventures, unexpectedly surviving harsh winters and record snowfall, Scrim has been successfully captured once again.

This latest escapade began in November when Scrim chewed through a second-floor window screen to make his thrilling getaway from Michelle Cheramie's home, where he was recuperating from his previous six-month adventure. His first break from captivity involved escaping his adoptive family's yard and enduring the challenges of the city, including a hurricane as well as sweltering summer heat that soared above 100°F.

In October, Scrim was discovered with some injuries – missing teeth and puncture marks likely from an air pellet gun. Cheramie eagerly shared the good news of Scrim's capture via Facebook, stating, "We got him!" Although she plans to elaborate on the full tale of his capture soon, Scrim is presently receiving care from Dr. Joe at a local animal hospital in Metairie.

During his time on the run, Scrim's adventures led to a massive social media following, captivating the attention of both the local community and media outlets. His escapades even prompted the New Orleans city council to honor his indomitable spirit through a special ceremony.

As Scrim steps back into a safer environment, Cheramie has plans to replace his current tracking collar with an Apple AirTag, ensuring he remains under better supervision during his upcoming recovery. Surely, his story is far from over!

Injured elephant at Athirappilly yet to recover from infection

Injured elephant at Athirappilly yet to recover from infection

An injured elephant, recently receiving treatment from a specialized veterinary team at Athirappilly, is still facing challenges with an infected wound. Observers report that the majestic creature has been wandering the Vettilappara area for the past two days, struggling with a deep wound on its forehead that continues to cause it significant distress.

To alleviate the irritation from flies, the elephant has taken to spraying mud over the painful area. Although it is still able to eat, its overall condition appears weak and fatigued. The local Forest department, under the guidance of DFO R. Lakshmi from Vazhachal, is actively monitoring the situation.

Community perspectives on whether to administer further treatment to the elephant are mixed. This particular elephant is estimated to be around 35 years old, and its troubling condition is believed to have been caused by a clash with another elephant. The veterinary intervention commenced on January 24, which involved a comprehensive effort from a dedicated team of 50 experts who tranquilized the animal, cleaned the wound, removed pus, and started antibiotic treatment.

February 22, 1985 Operation Beluga

February 22, 1985 Operation Beluga

In the midst of the Cold War tensions of 1984, as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists alarmingly moved the 'doomsday clock' to three minutes before midnight, an extraordinary story unfolded in the icy landscapes of the Chukchi Sea. While political leaders were embroiled in conflict, pods of Beluga whales, charmingly known as the 'canaries of the sea' due to their vocalizations, were converging to feast on large schools of cod, oblivious to the global uncertainty.

Beluga whales, with their distinctive white coloration and unique adaptations like the absence of a dorsal fin, thrive in the harsh northern waters. As the winter chill intensified, their struggle against thickening sea ice became life-threatening. In pursuit of food, hundreds of these gentle giants found themselves trapped, forced to huddle around dwindling air holes, while others succumbed beneath the frigid surface.

Subsistence hunters, initially thrilled by the sight of so many whales, understood the precariousness of the situation. A call for assistance led to heroic efforts, with helicopters delivering frozen fish and the icebreaker 'Moskva' navigating treacherous conditions to reach the beleaguered whales. When the icebreaker arrived, the Belugas, frightened and confused, took several days to acclimate to the massive vessel.

Through patience and ingenuity, Captain Kovalenko and her crew employed a unique strategy, moving slowly to encourage the whales to follow. To their surprise, they discovered that music played from the ship resonated with the whales, especially classical compositions. As the soothing sounds of composers like Shostakovich and Rachmaninov filled the air, the Belugas gradually began to emerge from their fear, moving closer and eventually following the icebreaker to safety.

This remarkable rescue effort culminated in late February, liberating the whales into the open water, all while the world outside remained mired in cold war disputes. As we reflect on this incident, it's poignant to remember that despite humanity's troubles, nature continues to persevere, and some of those Beluga whales may still roam the Arctic seas today.

Cockatoos show appetite for dips when eating bland food, find scientists

Cockatoos show appetite for dips when eating bland food, find scientists

Whether you’re indulging in the culinary masterpieces of Ottolenghi or relishing the delightful recipes from Nigella Lawson, there’s a universal joy in experimenting with diverse flavours and textures while preparing food. Surprisingly, recent research indicates that some cockatoos share this affinity for mixing their meals.

Previous studies have shown that these birds have a habit of dunking dry rusks into water, not unlike humans who dip biscuits into tea, suggesting they appreciate a softer texture. However, the latest findings reveal an even more intriguing behaviour: cockatoos dipping pasta into blueberry soy yoghurt.

According to Jeroen Zewald, the first author of the study conducted at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, the birds faced a culinary challenge when their food lacked flavour. “The birds really dunked it in like we would do with fries and ketchup,” he mentioned, illustrating a clear enjoyment of combining tastes.

In their experiments, the researchers observed that when presented with options such as pasta and cauliflower or potatoes and carrots, the cockatoos showed a distinct preference for blueberry soy yoghurt over plain soy yoghurt and even fresh water. While they did not dunk any carrots or cauliflower, some of them enthusiastically submerged their food items into the fruity yoghurt, hinting at a sophisticated palate.

This behaviour appears innovative. The team suggests it might not be instinctual, as not all birds demonstrated this dunking behaviour. Interestingly, Zewald admits to trying the combination himself, albeit without any endorsements, highlighting the uniqueness of this cockatoo culinary curiosity.

First lab-grown meat treats go on sale in the UK — for dogs

First lab-grown meat treats go on sale in the UK — for dogs

Cultivated chicken doggie snacks have gone on sale at a U.K. pet food retailer, Pets at Home. The retailer also happens to be a major investor in Meatly, the startup producing the meat ingredient contained in dog food brand The Pack’s Chick Bites, as the slaughter-free, low carbon treats are billed. (Other ingredients in the snacks are plant-based.) Meatly is claiming a world first for retailing cultivated meat for pet food, as the Guardian reports. The company gained regulatory clearance for the use-case last summer — claiming a European first. Chick Bites are its first foray into commercializing Meatly Chicken, its name for the meat it’s growing in bioreactors, after a one-time harvest of cells from a single chicken egg. But it has big plans to scale up. While this first doggie snack is a “limited release,” suggesting its production capacity is still capped, Meatly said its next steps will focus on scaling production and making products “more widely available to consumers.”
